Ahreum, once introduced as the fresh new face of top-tier girl group T-ara, is now making headlines not for her music, but for a string of shocking controversies that have culminated in a criminal conviction and prison sentence. Her journey from idol spotlight to societal outcast paints one of K-pop’s most tragic falls from grace.

A Promising Start Cut Short by Scandal
Born into a musical family, Ahreum joined T-ara in 2012 during the group’s peak, appearing in the music video for “Day By Day” and showcasing her vocal and rap talents. Her debut was expected to inject new energy into a group already dominating the charts alongside rivals like Girls’ Generation.

But just as her career began, T-ara was rocked by a massive bullying scandal involving member Hwayoung. Although Ahreum was not directly involved, the group’s image was irreparably damaged, leading to a steep decline in popularity. She was later placed in subunit T-ara N4, which failed to gain traction. By 2013, just one year after debuting, Ahreum left the group to pursue a solo career, only to disappear from the industry soon after.

Mental Health Concerns and Troubled Personal Life
In the years following her departure, Ahreum’s erratic social media activity raised concerns. Her cryptic, emotional posts led many to question her mental well-being. She made a brief return through survival show “The Unit” in 2017 but was eliminated early. A controversial interview where she expressed support for Hwayoung further alienated her remaining fanbase.

In 2019, Ahreum married businessman Kim Young-geul and had two children. However, by late 2023, she accused him of severe abuse toward both herself and their children, leading to a high-profile legal battle.

Public sentiment initially supported her, until investigators found no substantial evidence of abuse and inconsistencies in testimonies. Suspicion arose that she had coached her children to lie, resulting in her being charged with child exploitation and defamation.
In January 2025, Ahreum was sentenced to 8 months in prison with a 2-year probation, alongside mandatory child abuse prevention education. Two months later, in March, she attempted to take her own life amid mounting public backlash. Although she survived, further scandals followed.

Ahreum’s fiancé, Seo Dong-hoon, whom she intended to marry after finalizing her divorce, was implicated in yet another controversy. Dispatch revealed that the couple had scammed fans and acquaintances, soliciting money under false pretenses like hospital bills, car accidents, and child illness. On April 11, the court found them guilty of fraud totaling 37 million KRW (~$26,000 USD). Ahreum received a 6-month sentence, suspended with a 2-year probation.
Finding Strength in Her Children
After navigating the challenges of divorce, Ahreum’s journey took a heartfelt turn as she welcomed her daughter Mideum with her partner. The birth of Mideum was not just a moment of personal joy but also a profound reaffirmation of Ahreum’s role as a mother. Facing painful rumors and harsh public scrutiny, Lee openly defended her daughter and family, showing unwavering love and protection.
Now expecting her fourth child, whom she plans to name Rahwa, Ahreum continues to prioritize her children’s happiness and well-being above all else. Through every difficulty, her children have become her anchor and greatest source of strength. “Though the road has been difficult, my children are my greatest source of strength,” she shared.
The Bitter End of a Promising Star
Ahreum’s trajectory, from a hopeful K-pop debut under T-ara to a defendant in court, is a sobering tale of fame, fallouts, and failed redemption. Once envisioned as a rising star in one of K-pop’s most influential girl groups, her life now serves as a cautionary tale of the entertainment industry’s harsh spotlight and the personal demons fame can’t always hide.
